Darkside

Darkside

Darkside — also called darkcore — was the menacing 1992–1993 strain of British breakbeat hardcore that traded rave euphoria for dread: chopped Amen-style breaks at 150 to 167 BPM, sub-bass pressure, minor-key pads and horror-film dialogue sampled for atmosphere. Where happy hardcore smiled, darkside producers such as *Ed Rush*, *Doc Scott* and *Origin Unknown* built claustrophobic tracks around stop-start edits, pitch-bent drums and cinematic dread. The sound burned brightly and briefly on labels like #Reinforced# and #Moving Shadow#, and its rhythmic science fed directly into the emerging jungle and drum and bass of 1993–1994.
