Death 'n' Roll

Death 'n' roll is a style of death metal that emerged in Sweden in the early 1990s, when bands led by *Entombed* slowed the genre's tempos and rebuilt its riffs on the swing and groove of classic rock and roll. Downtuned, distortion-saturated guitars keep death metal's HM-2 crunch and guttural vocals, but songs follow verse-chorus structures at mid pace, with audible debts to hard rock and boogie. *Entombed*'s "Wolverine Blues" (1993) named and defined the approach, which *Carcass*, *Gorefest*, *Xysma* and later *Black Breath* adopted in varying mixtures of groove, hardcore and outlaw attitude.
