Depressive Black Metal

Depressive black metal, often abbreviated DSBM, is a substyle of black metal organized around despair rather than aggression or occult triumph. Where conventional black metal prizes speed and hostility, this form favors slow to mid-tempo repetition, minor-key tremolo melodies and extended song lengths that sustain a single mood of grief, isolation and self-destruction. Singing is typically anguished shrieks, wails or spoken passages, and recording is deliberately raw and distant. Piano, acoustic guitar and ambient interludes are common, and the style's small, internet-era audience treats the records as documents of genuine psychological distress.
