Detroit Sound

The "Detroit Sound" is not a single genre but a term encompassing the rich and varied musical heritage of Detroit, Michigan. It most prominently refers to three major developments: the polished, pop-oriented soul of #Motown# in the 1960s; the futuristic, synthesizer-driven sounds of Detroit techno in the 1980s; and a gritty, street-oriented style of hip hop that gained its own identity from the 1990s onward and dominates the term's current usage. Across these styles, the Detroit sound is characterised by innovation, resilience and a reflection of the city's social and industrial landscape.
