Dirty South

Dirty South is a regional style of hip hop from the Southern United States that rose to national prominence in the mid-1990s, centered on Atlanta, Houston, New Orleans, Memphis, and Miami. Its production draws on Miami bass, bounce, and chopped and screwed techniques alongside live instrumentation, favoring heavy low end, Roland 808 drum machines, and tempos ranging from slow, syrupy grooves to high-energy club tracks. Vocal delivery foregrounds regional dialects and slang, and the writing addresses Southern identity, street economies, car culture, and celebration, in explicit reaction against the East and West Coast dominance of earlier hip hop.
