Disco Rap

Disco rap is the first recorded form of hip hop, made in New York between 1979 and the early 1980s, in which MCs rap over disco and funk grooves. Where later rap turned to drum machines, disco rap kept live bands or studio replays of records such as *Chic*'s "Good Times", with string stabs, handclaps and long break sections under party chants, boasts and call-and-response. The style was created for *Sylvia Robinson*'s #Sugar Hill Records# by *The Sugarhill Gang*, *Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five* and their peers, translating the Bronx block party to vinyl before electro and the *Run-DMC* sound displaced it.
