Dolewave

Dolewave is an Australian indie rock tendency centred on Melbourne in the early 2010s: jangly, loosely played guitar pop sung in a dry, drawling voice about sharehouses, dead-end jobs and suburban youth. The name — from 'the dole', Australian slang for unemployment benefits — began in 2012 as an ironic message-board joke about the 'New Melbourne Jangle' of *Twerps*, *Dick Diver* and *Scott & Charlene's Wedding*, and stuck. Labels #Chapter Music# and #Bedroom Suck# documented the scene, whose unvarnished sound and local references influenced the later international success of *Courtney Barnett* and *Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever*.
