Doom Metal

Originating from the monolithic blues-rock dirges of early *Black Sabbath*, particularly their 1970 album "Paranoid", doom metal is a subgenre defined by oppressive weight and deliberate slowness. It employs heavily down-tuned guitars, immense distortion, and bass-centric frequencies to construct a sonic environment of dread and despair. The ethos eschews speed and technicality, prioritizing instead the emotional gravity conveyed through sustained chords, hypnotic repetition, and vocals that range from clean, melancholic wails to guttural roars. While never a mainstream force, its influence permeated metal's underground, spawning a diverse ecosystem of sub-styles from stoner to funeral doom.
