East Coast Club

East Coast club is the continuum of regional club musics that grew out of Baltimore club in the 1990s and 2000s, encompassing its Philadelphia and New Jersey offshoots. Baltimore club, created by *Scottie B*, *Frank Ski*, *DJ Technics* and others, fuses house and hip hop around chopped breakbeats, above all the Think break, at roughly 130 BPM, with looped, call-and-response vocal chants. Philly club pushed the formula faster and more manic, while Jersey club, from Newark, organised its swung kick patterns around dance-battle chants. All three circulated through local radio, mixtapes and neighbourhood parties rather than albums.
