Eccojams

Eccojams

Eccojams is a microgenre of sample-based electronic music and the earliest documented form of vaporwave. An eccojam isolates a short passage of a popular song, typically 1970s to 1990s pop, soft rock or R&B, slows it down, and loops it under heavy echo, reverb and pitch shifting, in a technique adapted from Houston's chopped and screwed. The repetitions isolate phrases whose meanings turn melancholic or absurd when detached from the source song. Coined and defined by *Daniel Lopatin* in 2009-2010, the style was deliberately lo-fi and amateur-accessible, and it supplied vaporwave with its core method and much of its nostalgic tone.
