Ethno Jazz

Ethno jazz, also called world jazz, is a branch of jazz that systematically incorporates the instruments, scales, rhythms and repertories of non-Western and folk traditions into jazz improvisation and composition. Its practitioners range from *Yusef Lateef* and *Ahmed Abdul-Malik*, who brought Arabic and Asian materials into 1950s American jazz, to the oud-led ensembles of *Rabih Abou-Khalil* and *Anouar Brahem*. Rather than decorating jazz with exotic colour, ethno jazz adopts foreign musical systems as working grammar, changing how melody, metre and ensemble roles are organised.
