Étude

Étude

An étude is a short instrumental composition conceived as a study: each piece isolates a specific technical problem — rapid scales, wide leaps, repeated notes, double stops, stamina in octaves — and drills it through concentrated repetition. Although rooted in the practice room, the concert étude, above all for piano, became a vehicle for serious musical expression when *Frédéric Chopin* published his Opp. 10 and 25 sets in the 1830s, proving that exercises could sustain poetry and drama. *Franz Liszt*, *Claude Debussy*, *Sergei Rachmaninoff* and *György Ligeti* later expanded the form into a laboratory for new sonorities, rhythms and compositional systems.
