Europop

Europop is the mainstream pop style that consolidated in continental Europe from the late 1960s, characterized by polished studio craft, simple and highly repetitive choruses, and lightweight subject matter delivered for a pan-European audience. Drawing on disco, schlager, and national variety traditions, and promoted heavily through television and the Eurovision Song Contest, it privileges melody and immediate accessibility over lyrical nuance, often in a simplified English designed to cross language borders. Sweden became its most successful exporter, from *ABBA* in the 1970s to the writer-producer systems behind *Ace of Base*, *Roxette*, and their successors.
