Experimental Techno

Experimental techno is the strand of techno that treats the genre's machine pulse as raw material for abstraction, drawing on industrial music, noise and electroacoustic composition. Producers such as *Surgeon*, *Regis* and *Emptyset* build tracks from distorted drum machines, feedback, tape degradation and irregular meters, keeping the four-on-the-floor grid only as a frame to be bent or abandoned. Developed in Birmingham and Berlin in the 1990s and renewed in the 2010s on labels such as #Downwards#, #PAN# and #Editions Mego#, it is techno made as much for close listening as for the warehouse floor it still inhabits.
