Extreme Prog Metal

Extreme prog metal is the wing of progressive metal that keeps the full aggression of extreme metal — death and black metal vocals, blast beats, dissonance and speed — inside compositions of progressive ambition: long forms, odd metres, conceptual arcs and studio craft. It took shape in the 1990s when *Death*'s later records, *Edge of Sanity*'s one-song album "Crimson" and a young *Opeth* proved that brutality and architecture could coexist, and it matured in the 2000s with *Enslaved*, *Ihsahn* and *Ne Obliviscaris*, for whom virtuosity serves atmosphere and narrative rather than display alone.
