Fado de Coimbra

Fado de Coimbra

Fado de Coimbra is the fado tradition of the Portuguese university city of Coimbra, distinct from Lisbon fado in its performers, instrumentation and mood. It is sung exclusively by men, traditionally students or alumni of the University of Coimbra, accompanied by the Coimbra guitar — a larger, lower-tuned variant of the Portuguese guitar — and classical guitar. Its repertoire joins love serenades addressed to the city and its women with songs of student life, farewell and social concern, delivered in a more formal, serenading manner than Lisbon's tavern style. *Carlos Paredes* carried its guitar art to the concert hall.
