Fijian Music

Fijian music spans the indigenous traditions of Fiji, from meke, the sung-dance narratives accompanied by lali slit drums, to the choral singing of Methodist churches and the guitar string bands of the modern era. Its best-known modern form is vude, 'rise up', a pop style built on Fijian-language songs over keyboards and drum machines that made *Laisa Vulakoro* the Vude Queen across sixteen albums. The umbrella also covers Indo-Fijian bhajan and kirtan, Rotuman and Banaban traditions, and contemporary Fijian gospel and popular recording artists such as *George "Fiji" Veikoso*.
