Filin

Filin

Filin, from the English 'feeling', is a Cuban song movement of the late 1940s and 1950s that recast the bolero and the canci贸n with the harmonic language of American jazz and the intimate delivery of the crooner. Guitarist-composers *C茅sar Portillo de la Luz* and *Jos茅 Antonio M茅ndez* wrote its standards, among them "Contigo en la distancia" and "La gloria eres t煤", sung close to the microphone over jazz-inflected guitar and piano. Its singers, *Elena Burke* and *Omara Portuondo* among them, emerged from groups such as *Cuarteto d'Aida* and from gatherings around the blind pianist *Frank Emilio Flynn*.
