Flamenco Jazz

Flamenco Jazz

Flamenco jazz is the fusion of flamenco with jazz improvisation and harmony, created in Spain in the late 1960s when saxophonist *Pedro Iturralde* recorded his "Jazz Flamenco" sessions with a young *Paco de Lucía*. The music keeps flamenco's defining materials — its Phrygian cadences, its twelve-beat compás cycles in forms such as bulerías and soleá, palmas handclapping and cajón — while opening them to modal and post-bop soloing on guitar, piano, saxophone and flute. Developed further by the circle of *Camarón de la Isla*, pianist *Chano Domínguez* and the guitar meetings of *Al Di Meola*, *John McLaughlin* and *Paco de Lucía*, it is now an established international style.
