Flamenco Nuevo

Flamenco nuevo, or new flamenco, is the contemporary renovation of flamenco that took shape in Spain from the late 1970s onward, opening the traditional forms to outside instrumentation and harmony while retaining cante, flamenco guitar and the compás cycles at its core. The generation inspired by *Camarón* and *Paco de Lucía* absorbed jazz, rock, pop, salsa and later electronic music and hip hop; groups such as *Ketama* and *Pata Negra* fused flamenco with pop, blues and Cuban music, and the Madrid label #Nuevos Medios# marketed the movement under the nuevo flamenco name. Traditional singers working in the idiom carried its vocabulary into mainstream Spanish popular music.
