Folkhop

Folkhop

Folkhop, also called bhangra-beat or urban desi, is the British Asian music that followed the decline of live bhangra in the mid-1990s. Bedroom DJs and producers bought vocal-only recordings by Punjabi folk singers in India and rebuilt them in software over looped hip hop beats, dhol and tumbi, dispensing with the live bands of classic bhangra. The result is more traditional in repertoire than bhangra yet wholly studio-made: folk melodies and rural themes of farming, tractors and village pride, framed by rap's materialist boasting and club production.
