Fon Music

Fon Music

Fon music is the traditional and popular music of the Fon people of southern Benin, rooted in the ritual drumming and song of Vodun ceremonies and reshaped in the 1960s and 1970s by urban dance bands. Its modern form, developed by *Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou* under *Cl茅ment M茅lom茅*, layers electric guitars, horns, organ and drum kit over sacred rhythms such as sato and sakpata, with lyrics in Fon, Yoruba and French. Singers and bands including *El Rego*, *Gnonnas Pedro* and *Ang茅lique Kidjo* carried the style from Cotonou's clubs to international audiences.
