Forró

Forró is the dance music of Brazil's Northeast, built on the baião rhythm and traditionally played by a trio of accordion, zabumba drum and triangle. Popularised nationally by *Luiz Gonzaga*, the 'King of Baião', in the 1940s, it supplied the soundtrack of the festas juninas and of Northeastern migrant life across Brazil. *Jackson do Pandeiro* added the syncopations of coco and samba, and *Dominguinhos* carried the accordion tradition forward; later variants added electric instruments (forró eletrônico) and a younger university circuit (forró universitário), but the trio format remains the genre's emblem.
