Fourth World

Fourth World is an approach to electronic and experimental music proposed by trumpeter and composer *Jon Hassell*, who imagined a unified sound joining the musics of non-Western cultures with contemporary studio technology. Its recordings layer treated trumpet, hand percussion, field recordings and synthesizer drones into humid, imaginary landscapes that suggest places which never existed, drawing on Indian raga, African drumming, Indonesian gamelan and minimalism while remaining rooted in none of them. Developed with *Brian Eno* at the start of the 1980s, the concept shaped ambient, world fusion and leftfield electronic music for decades.
