Freeform Hardcore

Freeform hardcore is a subgenre of UK hardcore and happy hardcore that emerged in Britain in the late 1990s, named by *Sharkey* of the *Nu Energy Collective*. It replaces happy hardcore's piano-led euphoria and pitched-up vocals with long, trance-influenced builds, layered acid and hoover lines, intricate bass design and extended breakdowns, usually at 160 to 175 BPM. Tracks develop over many minutes rather than repeating short riffs, borrowing the arc of hard trance while keeping hardcore's four-to-the-floor kick. Regional schools include UK freeform, Finnish FiNRG and Japanese freeform, and the style remains largely a singles and DJ-mix culture.
