French Folk Music

French folk music is the traditional music of France's regions — Brittany, Auvergne, Gascony, the Centre, Provence and others — together with the urban revival that reinterpreted it from the late 1960s. Its repertory of branles, bourrées, an dro and complaintes is played on hurdy-gurdy, cornemuse bagpipes, diatonic accordion, fiddle and bombarde, and sung in French and regional languages including Breton and Occitan. Groups such as *Malicorne*, *Tri Yann* and *La Bamboche*, and the Breton harp revival led by *Alan Stivell*, carried the repertory to concert stages while village dance traditions continued alongside.
