Fuji

Fuji is a Yoruba popular music of Nigeria, created in Lagos in the 1960s by *Sikiru Ayinde Barrister* from the Islamic were (ajisari) dawn songs sung to wake the faithful in Ramadan. A percussion-rich dance music of talking drums, sekere, bata and congas under call-and-response singing, fuji dispensed with the guitars of jùjú and apala in its classic form and built long, improvisatory performances around praise, philosophy and social commentary. Its stars — Barrister, *Kollington Ayinla* and *Wasiu Ayinde Marshal* — turned it into one of Nigeria's biggest-selling musics.
