Funk carioca

Funk carioca is the electronic dance music of Rio de Janeiro's favelas, created by DJs who looped Miami bass, electro and hip-hop breaks for the baile funk parties of the late 1980s. Built around the sampled 'Volt Mix' beat and, from 1998, the tamborz茫o rhythm drawn from Afro-Brazilian capoeira and candombl茅 drumming, it combines 808 percussion, chopped vocal samples and rapid-fire Portuguese MCing. Its substyles range from the melodic funk melody of *Claudinho & Buchecha* to the explicit proibid茫o of baile MCs, and in the 2010s *Ludmilla* and *Anitta* carried it into Brazilian mainstream pop.
