Funk consciente

Funk consciente is the socially conscious strand of Brazilian funk, in which the MC's account of favela life, poverty, racism, police violence, faith and the desire for peace takes precedence over party, erotic or ostentation themes. It rides the same Miami-bass-derived tamborzão beat as funk carioca and funk paulista, but production is kept spare so the words carry, and its choruses are written as communal slogans. Emerging in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1990s and becoming São Paulo's first native funk style, it is the funk counterpart of conscious rap, defined entirely by the weight it gives its message.
