Funk Metal

Funk metal emerged in the mid-1980s, abstracting the rhythmic architecture of funk and the sonic force of heavy metal and punk. It is defined by a rhythm section-forward mix where syncopated, slap-bass techniques provide the primary melodic and rhythmic drive, contrasting with aggressive, often distorted guitar riffs. The genre's ethos frequently merged socially conscious or satirical lyricism with a high-energy, groove-oriented performance style. While its commercial peak occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s, funk metal's hybridity was a critical precursor to the alternative metal movement that followed, reshaping the boundaries of hard rock.
