Funk Pop

Funk Pop

Funk pop is the meeting of funk's rhythm-first discipline with pop's melodic economy: tight basslines, clipped guitar, brass stabs and synthesizer hooks arranged around choruses built for radio. It emerged in the late 1970s as funk acts such as *Chic* and *Earth, Wind & Fire* streamlined their sound, and was codified by *Prince* and *Rick James*, whose records kept the groove of the dancefloor inside three-to-five-minute songs. The idiom returned to the centre of mainstream pop in the 2010s, when "Uptown Funk" and records by *Bruno Mars* and *Dua Lipa* rebuilt contemporary hits on funk's chassis.
