Funky Breaks

Funky breaks is the party-first stream of breakbeat dance music that flourished from the mid-1990s: funk, soul and old-school hip-hop breakbeats chopped and looped under scratches, vocal samples and heavy bass, kept resolutely fun and danceable. *Fatboy Slim* and *Propellerheads* were its chart faces — "You've Come a Long Way, Baby" (1998) carried the formula worldwide — while British labels such as #Finger Lickin' Records# and DJs including *Krafty Kuts*, the *Plump DJs* and *Freestylers* turned it into a durable club circuit distinct from both big beat spectacle and darker breakbeat styles.
