Future Funk

Future funk is a dance-oriented offshoot of vaporwave that emerged online in the early 2010s, built by chopping and looping samples from 1970s disco, post-disco funk and especially 1980s Japanese city pop, then setting them to upbeat four-on-the-floor house beats in the French house manner. Where vaporwave slows and estranges its sources, future funk accelerates them into euphoric, loop-based tracks by producers such as *Saint Pepsi*, *MACROSS 82-99* and *Yung Bae*. The music is inseparable from its visual culture of vintage anime loops, neon typography and idealized imagery of Japan's bubble-economy era.
