G-Funk

G-funk, short for gangsta funk, is a West Coast hip hop style that emerged in Los Angeles in the early 1990s under producer *Dr. Dre*. Built by replaying and interpolating 1970s P-Funk records by *Parliament* and *Funkadelic*, it layers deep, rolling basslines and live-sounding drums beneath high-pitched, portamento synthesizer leads — the 'whining' synth — and laid-back, melodic rapping and sung hooks. Slower and more musical than the sample-dense East Coast production of its era, G-funk's polished, cruising sound carried gangsta rap to the top of the pop charts through "The Chronic" and *Snoop Dogg*'s "Doggystyle", and set the template for West Coast rap for a decade.
