Galician Folk Music

Galician folk music is the traditional music of Galicia in north-western Spain, centred on the gaita, the Galician bagpipe, whose solo and band playing anchors festivals, processions and dances such as the mui帽eira and jota. Fiddles, hurdy-gurdy, accordion, tambourine (pandeireta) and frame drums support a repertory of dance tunes, ballads and the women's percussion-and-voice groups known as pandereteiras. Long framed as part of a Celtic Atlantic world shared with Ireland, Scotland and Brittany, Galician tradition was revived from the 1970s by groups such as *Milladoiro* and *Luar na Lubre*, who carried it to international folk stages.
