Gamelan degung

Gamelan degung is the classical gamelan of the Sundanese people of West Java, Indonesia: a small ceremonial ensemble of bronze gongs and metallophones with bamboo flute, tuned to the five-tone pélog degung scale. Created for the courts of the Sundanese regents (bupati) in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it is quieter, slower and more intimate than the gamelan of Bali or Central Java, its sound defined by the suling flute's long melodic flights over soft, repeating gong cycles. Long an emblem of Sundanese aristocratic identity, degung now accompanies weddings, festivals and official ceremony throughout West Java.
