Gamelan gong kebyar

Gong kebyar is the explosive Balinese gamelan style that emerged in north Bali around 1915 and became the island's dominant ensemble music. A kebyar orchestra of metallophones, gongs, drums and flutes plays interlocking parts at high speed, with sudden unison explosions, kebyar meaning 'to burst into flame', and abrupt, complete stops. Its repertoire accompanies dance and temple ceremony, and village clubs compete fiercely at festivals. The 1928 #Odeon# and #Beka# recordings, reissued as "Bali 1928", first carried the style abroad; ensembles such as *脟udamani* and *Gamelan Sekar Jaya* sustain it internationally.
