Gamelan jegog

Gamelan jegog

Gamelan jegog is the bamboo gamelan of Jembrana in west Bali, built from giant bamboo tubes mounted over resonator boxes, the largest approaching three metres in length and requiring two players. Invented around 1912 by the artist *Kiyang Geliduh* to entertain agricultural workers, the ensemble plays an upbeat repertory of dances and processionals whose deep, booming bass and rapid interlocking melodies carry for kilometres at night. Village troupes compete at festivals across the regency, and the sound reached world audiences through *Geinoh Yamashirogumi*, whose jegog ensemble underpins the score of "Akira".
