Garifuna Music

Garifuna music is the music of the Garifuna, the Afro-Indigenous people of the Caribbean coast of Belize, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua, descended from West African and Island Carib ancestors deported from St. Vincent in 1797. It is built on interlocking barrel drums — the primero and segunda — gourd shakers and conch and turtle shells, supporting call-and-response singing in the Garifuna language. Its genres include the fast danced punta, the guitar-led paranda, chumba, wanaragua and hüngühüngü, and its modern exponents *Andy Palacio*, *Aurelio MartÃnez* and *Umalali* have carried it internationally.
