Glam Punk

Glam punk fuses the androgynous theatricality of glam rock with the raw aggression of protopunk. Emerging in New York in the early 1970s around the *New York Dolls*, it pairs heavily distorted yet melodic guitar riffs and straightforward, driving rhythms with flamboyant dress and makeup that mocked rock machismo. Its attitude is nihilistic and street-level, its presentation knowingly artificial — a contrast that made it a direct bridge between *T. Rex* and *David Bowie* on one side and the punk movements of New York and London on the other. Later revivals, from *Hanoi Rocks* to *Turbonegro*, have repeatedly renewed its blueprint of punk energy delivered with pop hooks and camp.
