Global Bass

Global Bass

Global bass is the umbrella term applied in the late 2000s and early 2010s to club music that fused regional dance styles from the global South with electronic dance production: Angolan kuduro, Brazilian baile funk, Colombian and Peruvian cumbia, dancehall and the reggaeton dembow were rebuilt with wobble bass, sidechained kicks and EDM dynamics. Propagated through blogs, mixtapes and labels such as #Mad Decent#, #Man Recordings# and #ZZK Records#, the movement encompassed moombahton, digital cumbia and powwow-step. Acts including *Buraka Som Sistema*, *Major Lazer* and *A Tribe Called Red* defined its international phase before the label faded.
