Gothic Metal emerged in the early 1990s as a direct offshoot of the UK's doom/death metal scene, merging its ponderous, heavy riffing with the melancholic atmospheres of gothic rock. Pioneered by acts like *Paradise Lost* on their album "Gothic", the style is defined by a dramatic juxtaposition of textures: distorted, down-tuned guitars against mournful keyboard melodies, clean arpeggios, and often a contrasting vocal approach pairing guttural growls with ethereal female singing. This "beauty and the beast" dynamic became a subgenre hallmark. Its thematic core explores romance, despair, and horror, solidifying a sound that achieved significant European popularity in the late '90s and influenced a wave of symphonic and mainstream rock acts.
