Gothic Pop

Gothic Pop

Gothic pop applies the melodic directness and verse-chorus craft of pop music to the imagery and atmosphere of goth: minor-key synthesizer lines, chiming or distorted guitars, and sweet, often female voices singing about ghosts, fairy tales, cemeteries and doomed romance. Where gothic rock emphasises dread and abrasion, gothic pop keeps hooks bright and choruses immediate, so the darkness reads as romantic rather than threatening. The style crystallised around the Canadian band *The Birthday Massacre*, whose records from "Violet" (2005) onward defined a recognisable niche, and extends across darkwave and electronic acts that privilege song over ritual.
