Gothic Rock

Emanating from the UK post-punk scene of the late 1970s, gothic rock established a distinct sonic and aesthetic identity. The genre is defined by its dark, introspective, and often dramatic atmosphere, constructed from effects-laden guitars that favor texture and melody over overt virtuosity. These soundscapes are anchored by prominent, melodic basslines and propulsive drum patterns, frequently supplied by early drum machines. Vocals are typically deep, resonant, and delivered in a detached baritone, conveying themes of existentialism, romanticism, and morbidity. While its commercial peak occurred in the mid-1980s, gothic rock's influence shaped subsequent alternative and darkwave movements.
