Grand Opera

Grand opéra is the large-scale French opera of the 19th century, in four or five acts with historical plots, massed choruses, processions, spectacle and a ballet, created for the Paris Opéra. *Giacomo Meyerbeer*'s "Les Huguenots" and *Fromental Halévy*'s "La Juive" define a genre built on public ritual and private passion at monumental scale.
