H8000

H8000 is the hardcore scene of West Flanders, Belgium, named for the 8000 postal code of the Bruges and Kortrijk region. Centred on *Good Life Recordings*, founded by *Nations on Fire* singer Edward Verhaeghe, the scene fused American straight-edge hardcore with European death and thrash metal: down-tuned chugging riffs, gang choruses and militant vegan straight-edge ethics. Bands such as *Congress*, *Liar*, *Arkangel* and *Reprisal* made H8000 the seedbed of European metalcore in the later 1990s, its sound exported worldwide while remaining defiantly local in organisation and rhetoric.
