Hardcore, in electronic dance music, is the umbrella for the fast, aggressive styles that split from rave in the early 1990s: hardcore techno, gabber, happy hardcore, Frenchcore, UK hardcore and speedcore. The music is built around a distorted, overdriven kick drum at tempos from roughly 150 BPM upward, with hoover stabs, rave sirens, breakbeats and shouted samples, mixed for maximum physical impact in warehouses and festival arenas. Centred historically on Rotterdam and the Dutch gabber scene and on labels such as #Rotterdam Records# and #Mokum#, it is defined against both commercial dance music and the punk genre that shares its name.
