Hi-NRG

Hi-NRG is an uptempo style of disco and electronic dance music that developed in the late 1970s and peaked in the 1980s, driven by an octave-jumping synthesizer bassline, a four-on-the-floor kick drum and tempos around 124–140 BPM. Forged in gay clubs by producers such as *Patrick Cowley* and *Bobby Orlando* and singers including *Sylvester* and *Divine*, it replaced disco's orchestration with sequenced electronics and urgent, euphoric vocals. Named in the British dance press in the mid-1980s, Hi-NRG fed directly into Eurobeat, eurodance and the pop productions of *Stock Aitken Waterman*.
