Hindustani Classical Music

Hindustani Classical Music is the art music tradition of the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent, distinct from its southern Carnatic counterpart. Shaped by centuries of synthesis with Persian and Islamic aesthetics, particularly during the Mughal Empire, its core is an improvisational exploration of a raga (melodic framework) within a tala (rhythmic cycle). The performance, often featuring instruments like the sitar, sarod, santoor, and bansuri alongside a tabla accompanist, builds from a slow, meditative alap to a complex, rhythmically charged climax. Its global dissemination, notably by artists like *Ravi Shankar*, has positioned it as a significant stream within world music.
