Hip house emerged in the late 1980s from Chicago and New York, materializing as a direct fusion of house music's electronic pulse and hip hop's vocal cadences. The form is defined by the juxtaposition of four-on-the-floor drum machine patterns, often from Roland TR-808 and 909 units, with rapped or spoken-word verses. Its sonic palette frequently incorporates sampled funk loops, acidic synth lines derived from the TB-303, and sparse, repetitive basslines. While its primary commercial peak was brief, hip house established a foundational template for dance music's integration with rap, shaping the trajectory of later genres like Eurodance and big beat.
